Who Owns Winston Churchill's Words?

Winston Churchill would have liked Freakonomics Radio, the thought provoking podcast series derived from the international best-seller written by rogue enconomist Steven D. Levitt and journalist Stephen J. Dubner. This week, Freakonomics Radio (podcast on iTunes and, due to be broadcast in the spring on NPR) features a conversation with Barry Singer, the proprietor of Chartwell Booksellers and the author of CHURCHILL STYLE. The subject: Who owns Winston Churchill's words? Singer discusses the Churchill estate's exclusive copyright stake in Winston Churchill's words. If you want to write a book about Churchill and quote him, you have to pay the Churchill family, as Singer points out: "I used 3,872 words of Winston Churchill’s in CHURCHILL STYLE, and that cost me £950, which is roughly 40 cents a word."     >TUNE IN<

Please join Barry Singer on Sunday afternoon, January 27, at 92YTribeca (the 92nd Street Y's downtown outpost in Tribeca) for EAT, DRINK AND THINK...LIKE CHURCHILL, a celebration of Churchill's favorite foods and beverages served up with a pair of speakers - Mr. Singer, discoursing on the dining and drinking aspects of Churchill Style, which are plentiful - and the esteemed biographer Barbara Leaming, author of the recent CHURCHILL DEFIANT, among many others.

2:00 PM Janurary 27 @ 92YTribeca 200 Hudson Street (212.601.1000) Admission is $58 per person but we are delighted to offer our customers and friends a $10 discount. Just enter the promotional code WINSTON when ordering your tickets HERE.
